- Choose your location settings (recommended access to location while using the app).
- Microphone access is only applicable for legacy WINDmeters (plugs in using 3.5mm headphone jack). Microphone access is not required for any Bluetooth connected meters.
- Accept Bluetooth connection permission for all Bluetooth connected meters (WFANO-01c/d, WFANO-02a/b/c/d/e, WFPSM-02a/b/c/d/e).
Initial Settings & Preferences
- Choose initial settings and preferences, then tap "
" in the top left to save and continue.
- You can access additional settings and preferences in the Settings menu.
Connecting the WEATHERmeter (or Bluetooth WINDmeter)
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your mobile device.
- Open the Wind & Weather Meter App.
- Press the center button on the WEATHERmeter to power it on. You should see a faint blue LED on the device, it will go out once connected. If prompted with a "Not Connected" message, choose "Dismiss", then connect your Bluetooth WIND/WEATHERmeter.
- A Start button will appear indicating the WEATRHERmeter is connected and ready to stream observations to your device.
Taking a Measurement

- Press Start to begin a reading and press Stop to end the reading.
- Save your reading, add notes and make adjustments as needed.
- Share your readings with friends on social media, text, email, etc. or download readings.
Powering Off & Storage
To shut down the WEATHERmeter, press and hold the center button until you see the LED flash quickly. The device will also power off automatically after about 30 seconds of non-use when the app is running in the background.
Store your WEATHERmeter or WINDmeter in its case for protection when it's not in use.
Meter Statuses
The LED patterns on the meter and the app screen icons together indicate five different states outlined in the table below:
Direction Reporting
The meteorological standard for a wind direction report indicates where the wind is coming from, not the direction the wind is blowing towards. For example, a wind direction of "W" or 270° means the wind is blowing from the West to the East. Be sure that you are holding the WEATHERmeter with the logo facing you while facing into the wind. Both you and the device should face directly into the wind. If your back is to the wind during a sample, your wind reading will be approximately 180° off.
Compass & Calibration
Switching compass setting options
The Wind & Weather Meter app has an option in the settings menu to switch compass options if your meter has its own internal compass.
Note: WEATHERmeter models with internal compasses: WFANO-02a, WFANO-02e, WFPSM-02a, WFPSM-02c, WFPSM-02d, WFPSM-02e, and WFANO-02-AG. A model code is displayed on the box. Most WEATHERmeters and the WEATHERmeter for Precision Shooting model WFPSM-02b do not have internal compasses. The app will default to use the compass of the user’s mobile device. If you do not see an option to switch to the WEATHERmeter's compass in the app settings, your meter does not have an internal compass.
Using the meter's onboard compass
If using the meter's direction setting, the physical orientation of the meter into the wind will be important for accurate direction readings. Face directly into the wind and hold the WEATHERmeter above your head with the logo facing you. If the wind direction changes over the sampling period, either end the reading or adjust the angle for an average direction over the duration of the sampling period.
Even with calibration, the compass direction from the meter may not be as accurate as most mobile devices. Smart phones have other sensors to help determine direction (GPS, accelerometer) and can often auto-calibrate.
Calibrating the onboard compass
Please see Compass Calibration.
Using the connected mobile device's compass
The WEATHERmeter app is able to use the connected phone's compass heading for an accurate wind direction reading. If you are using your phone's compass for wind direction, remember you will need to also point the phone in the direction where the winds are coming from. Face directly into the wind and hold the WEATHERmeter above your head with the logo facing you. If the wind direction changes over the sampling period, either end the reading or adjust the angle for an average direction over the duration of the sampling period.
Tip: If your mobile device has an auxiliary port, you can use the plastic headphone jack accessory to mount the WEATHERmeter on your phone. The meter can be up to 15 degrees off-axis from the wind and accurately measure winds.
Battery
There is a replaceable CR2450 battery in the WEATHERmeter which provides approximately 500 hours of use on low power and 300 on high power.
If your battery needs to be replaced, peel off the silicone sleeve starting at the top of the device to reveal the battery compartment. Slide the battery door open, replace the battery, and put the sleeve back on.
See Battery Replacement for more info and an instructional video.
