Customizing Maps Follow
TempestOne offers a number of ways to customize the map display to help you get the most out of model forecasts and current observations. The majority of those options can be found by clicking Customize in the left panel to expand your display options.
At the top of the customize dropdown menu, there is a dropdown listing of map backgrounds you can choose from, including the basic map, a satellite view, a terrain view, a high-contrast simplified view, and a dark color scheme map. Immediately below that list is a pair of overlay options. You can choose to show US Coast Guard nautical charts or BOEM lease areas.
Beneath those map options, there's a box that lets you control what information you wish to display. That box is broken into two tabs - Observations and Forecasts. An additional set of predefined custom regional map displays can also be found in the Regional Products pulldown menu in the left panel.
Observations
If you select the observations tab, you'll see several options to adjust which observations are displayed:
Parameter: You have the option to display wind, temperature, air pressure (mean sea level), humidity, or water level, and any stations that have the selected data will display on the map.
Weather Stations: You can select which station types you wish to display. At the top of this section, a short dropdown list gives you the choice to show all selected stations or only those that are quality-assured sufficiently as to be approved for use in StormPrint tropical cyclone wind swath maps. Below that, you can choose which sources of data you wish to view (for more information on the different types of sensors we display, click here)
Crowdsourced Data: You can also elect to display onsite reports submitted by users of our consumer apps (see Additional Information in Station Wind Reports for more info on this feature)
Additional Map Overlays: You can also overlay radar, satellite, sea-surface temperatures, and National Weather Service marine forecast zones by clicking the checkboxes for those options
Forecasts
After selecting the forecasts tab, you'll be presented with a list of forecast parameters to choose from and a selection of observation types you can opt to overlay.
Once you choose a forecast variable, additional options will appear that allows you to choose which forecast model to view, which model initial time, and the overlay opacity of the model forecast over the base map.
One-click Regional Products
To save time, we also include a set of preset display options which can be found under the Regional Products pulldown in the left panel. Those pre-built map displays include overlays of observations over model forecasts, a display of wind observations showing wind gusts, a clickable map that will display NWS marine forecasts, a basic model forecast default preset, a map showing all active onsite reports, a map showing all water-level monitoring stations in our database, a sea-surface temperature map, a map with wind observations overlaid on radar imagery, a similar map with wind and wind gusts displayed over the radar, and a satellite display with wind observations overlaid.
